BEAUTY AND THE BULB! DO’S AND DON’TS OF BATHROOM LIGHTING - L Designs & Interiors.com

BEAUTY AND THE BULB! DO’S AND DON’TS OF BATHROOM LIGHTING

As the room where you start and end your day and complete everyday tasks proper bathroom lighting is a must! Before you start flicking switches it is important to consider the do’s and don’ts that impact bathroom illumination!

As with any room you will want to consider task, ambient, and accent lighting and this is equally important in the John!

DO add lighting in your shower.  Wet-located, recessed fixtures – especially those that contribute to an energy efficient approach are ideal.

DO utilize recessed lighting. This provides optimum light distribution.  Proper distribution of recessed lighting provides an even illumination which greatly minimizes glare and contributes to visual comfort.

DO incorporate task lighting on the side of mirrors.  As the term implies, its purpose is to increase the visibility of the task at hand.  Wall sconces are among the popular choices for mirror side lighting and proper placement is critical. According to the American Lighting Association, “they should be mounted with the center of the fixtures about 60” high.”

DO use dimmable lights. By giving you control of brightness levels, dimmable lights create a mood of serenity for a bath and a mood of calm first thing in the early a.m.

DON’T choose light fixtures with exposed bulbs While this is a popular trend, save this style for other rooms in your home. For bathrooms you want to diffuse light for smooth, even illumination.

DON’T shy away from fashionable pieces that make a statement. The bathroom isn’t just about function.

DON’T be satisfied with just an overhead light.

DON’T ignore the importance of lightbulbs. Avoid anything to fluorescent or too yellow. A crisp white light is always best.  If this is too bright, that’s where the dimmer comes in handy.

Remember, light fixtures should look as good when they’re off as they do when they’re on!
