Purchase impact and power…making a difference!

Shopping with your conscious can be tricky in a world where we often don’t know where most items are made. Luckily, West Elm has made it easier for us to find furniture and textiles that were created by people receiving good treatment and wages. Within the home brand’s new catalog, the store has an entire collection of pieces that are all fair-trade certified.

“People should choose Fair Trade items as it is a small step towards thinking about the global impact of the power of their purchase,” says Jennifer Gootman, VP of social consciousness and innovation for the brand. “By empowering our customers to be conscious about where their products are created, the cumulative impact has the potential to be huge. After all, on both sides of the supply chain, we’re just human.”

While many larger companies could overlook a commitment, West Elm has made conscious practices part of its mission. “We want our customers to feel empowered to buy a product for their home because they love the design, materials, and function, but also provide value to the makers and the communities where West Elm products are made,” remarks Gootman. “It is our responsibility to celebrate the people who make our products and connect them with consumers who are interested in making meaningful purchasing decisions that have social and environmental impact.

“We recently did a trip to our various fair-trade facilities and were able to see the value of our commitment within these communities. With the fair-trade premium, they were able to buy various things from hygiene products, bikes to cut commute times in half, warm lunches, or clean water,” she says. “West Elm is incredibly proud of the impact that has already been made and that we will continue to make in the coming years.”
